Battery-Powered Lamp • 5 Weeks • Fall 2025

After sunset, exposure to cool artificial light disrupts circadian rhythm.

Increased use of handheld and portable devices that emit blue light has made this disruption a prominent issue for many, but certain professions have dealt with a sleep schedule disrupted by blue light for much longer.

Morgan expresses that a night shift affects her sleep quality even days after working.

Sleep the next day is “not as restful.”

Meet Morgan Archiable, a senior nursing student who fulfills her clinical requirements during the night shift. I interviewed Morgan about the effects that exposure to cool, fluorescent lighting in the hospital has on her sleep.

Feeling “tired and sluggish” for two days after working.

Perception of time is off; “it doesn’t sink in what time it is.”

Exposure to warm light before sleeping mimics sunset, helping to mitigate the effects of nighttime blue light exposure. This leads to overall better sleep quality.

Design goal: Create an inviting battery-powered lamp that emits warm light to promote quality, restful sleep.
